School Gardening
Modiri Technical High

Growing food at Modiri Technical High School to power the student feeding scheme and feed the surrounding community.

About the Programme

The JCK Life Changers School Gardening Programme operates at Modiri Technical High School in Mamelodi. We established and maintain school gardens that serve two vital purposes: feeding learners through the school's feeding scheme, and providing fresh produce to surrounding community members in need.

We believe no child should have to sit through a school day on an empty stomach. Hunger destroys concentration, kills motivation, and steals futures. Through this programme, we plant seeds of food and seeds of hope at the same time.

What We Grow

  • Leafy vegetables — spinach, cabbage, and Swiss chard
  • Root vegetables — carrots, beetroot, and sweet potato
  • Legumes — beans and peas for protein
  • Seasonal produce based on community need

How It Works

JCK Life Changers supplies seeds, soil amendments, and tools. Volunteer members from the church help prepare and maintain the garden plots alongside school staff and willing learners. Harvest is split between the school feeding scheme and community distribution.

This programme also serves an educational purpose — learners observe and participate in food growing, gaining practical agricultural skills and an understanding of where food comes from. For many learners, this is their first hands-on experience with food production.

Impact on Learners

When children eat, they learn. When they learn, they grow. When they grow, their communities grow with them. The simple act of providing a nutritious meal during the school day can be the difference between a child who completes their education and one who drops out.

We are committed to Modiri Technical High School and plan to expand the programme to additional schools across Mamelodi as resources allow.

Our anchor school, where the programme began and continues to grow season by season.

Feeding Scheme Integration

All produce from the school garden feeds directly into the school's official feeding scheme, maximising impact.

Community Distribution

Surplus produce goes to needy community members around the school, extending the programme's reach beyond the classroom.

Our Conviction

"We believe no one deserves to go to bed with an empty stomach — and no child deserves to try to learn on one."
